RESUMÉ WRITING
What Is a Resumé? A resumé is a sheet that summarizes and emphasizes your education (high school), academic honors, extracurricular activities, sports participation, work experience, volunteer experience and special skills.Why Is a Resumé Important? Your resumé is a portrait of yourself. It should GRAB the employers attention and convince him/her in 30 seconds or less that YOU should be interviewed. It is necessary that your resumé emphasizes what makes you unique. This could include your skills, interests, and accomplishments.
Resumé Do's
- Do sell yourself by highlighting the skills and experience most relevant to the position which you are seeking.
- Do be brief and concise, include your important accomplishments in as few words as possible.
- Do use bullets and action words (see attached work sheet) to highlight marketable skills acquired through your positions/experience.
- Do keep your verb tenses and format consistent.
- Do check your grammar and spelling carefully. Do not rely solely on "spell check."
- Do try to fit your resumé on one page.
- Do ensure that your resumé is neat and visually appealing.
- Do leave an appropriate and equal amount of margin space on all sides of your resumée (i.e., 1/2-1").
- Do have a parent or teacher review it.
- Don't use the personal pronoun "I"
- Don't falsify any information on a resumé.
- Don't abbreviate, if avoidable.
- Don't include highly detailed information; save it for the interview.
- Don't have any typographical or grammatical errors.
- Don't forget to include any unique talents, skills, experiences and accomplishments.
